Following the rare and tragic accident where a cargo plane skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), RTHK’s flagship current affairs program, The Millennium, invited HKPAPA (Hong Kong Professional Airline Pilots Association) to provide professional insight into the potential causes and safety implications of the event.

While emphasizing that the official investigation is ongoing, HKPAPA highlighted two primary areas that authorities will scrutinize:
Mechanical Failure: Potential issues could involve the aircraft’s "nose gear," which is critical for steering upon landing, or the "rudder," which controls the aircraft’s lateral stability and direction. A malfunction in either system can cause an aircraft to veer sharply off-course.
Human Factors & Training: HKPAPA noted the importance of reviewing the safety records and training protocols of the carrier involved. Given that this operator has had previous incidents internationally, investigators must look at maintenance standards and crew proficiency.
Environmental & Operational Challenges
The discussion also touched upon the "micro-climates" of HKIA. HKPAPA explained that sudden weather phenomena, such as "wind shear" or unpredictable gusts, can strike in a matter of seconds, challenging even the most experienced crews during the critical touchdown phase.
