In Hong Kong, most students' "work experience" is often limited to passive observation and campus tours. But aviation has never been an industry where you can "just watch."
Recently, the Hong Kong Professional Airline Pilots Association (HKPAPA) welcomed the Careers and Transition Team from Kellett School Hong Kong to our training center. Together, we designed a "Work Experience Week" that is fundamentally different—an immersive program where students step into the cockpit of the aviation world rather than looking through the window.
Why Kellett? Why Aviation?
Kellett School is one of the few top-tier international schools in Hong Kong rooted in the British education system. Its students are high-achievers aimed at top global universities, and its career planning is famously rigorous.
Yet, even in the best schools, aviation remains an industry with high "information asymmetry." Many students still view aviation through a narrow lens: Planes, Pilots, and Airports.
The real aviation world, however, is a highly systematized industry involving:
Flight Training & Assessment Systems
Aviation Safety & Human Factors
Airspace & Operational Management
Decision-making under pressure
A culture of high discipline and exacting standards
HKPAPA exists to bridge this gap—transforming aviation from "imagination" into "understanding."
Why only 20 students?
For this Work Experience Week, we intentionally capped the intake at 20 students. The reason is simple: truly valuable aviation training cannot be taught in a crowded hall.
In a cockpit:
There are no "spectators."
Every decision requires immediate judgment.
Every mistake has a consequence (even in a simulator).
We designed a small-group, high-intensity environment focused on participation rather than sightseeing. This is the hallmark of our approach.
We don't offer "Experiences"—we offer "Simulated Reality"
At HKPAPA, our definition of work experience is clear: If the student isn't involved in the decision-making, it isn't experience. During the week, students don't just watch; they participate in:
1. Cockpit Decision-Making & Logic
Under the guidance of instructors, students enter professional flight simulators to:
Understand basic flight control logic.
Practice maintaining heading, altitude, and airspeed.
Experience the high-stakes decision-making of approach and landing.
The goal isn't "flying well," but understanding the "why" behind every maneuver.
2. Aviation Operations & Systems Thinking
Using case-based discussions, students tackle real-world scenarios:
Managing flight delays and trade-offs.
Weather, fuel, and route planning.
The delicate balance between safety and commercial interests.
3. Airline Pilot Mentorship (The Core Value)
Perhaps the most vital element is the direct mentorship from active or veteran airline pilots. They pull back the curtain on:
Cadet Pilot recruitment requirements.
The competencies airlines actually value.
How to prepare early (beyond just chasing flight hours).
Teachers in the Cockpit: Understanding the "Degree of Difficulty"
We also invited Kellett’s teachers to try the simulators. If a teacher hasn't felt the pressure of maintaining a stable approach while managing multiple tasks, it is difficult for them to advise a student on whether they are suited for the career. By experiencing the rigor firsthand, the school can provide far more accurate and grounded career guidance.
A Reality Check for Students and Parents
If your goal is to become an airline pilot, you must understand one thing: Airlines don't care how many hours you've flown nearly as much as they care about how well you understand the industry.
Many students rush to accumulate "flight hours" too early, while neglecting:
Communication Skills (specifically technical English).
Decision-Making under stress.
Situational Awareness.
CRM (Crew Resource Management) and teamwork.
The students who stand out in interviews are those who can say:
"I know what this industry entails, and I know exactly why I fit."
