Following the rare and tragic cargo plane accident at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), DotDotNews interviewed HKPAPA (Hong Kong Professional Airline Pilots Association) to help the public understand the immense technical challenges pilots face during late-night operations and the specific difficulties of ground-level obstacle detection.
As the industry's expert voice, HKPAPA shed light on why even a routine landing can turn into a complex emergency in a matter of seconds.
Technical Factors in Night Operations
In the report, HKPAPA highlighted several critical variables that pilots must manage simultaneously during a midnight landing:
The Fatigue Factor: Cargo flights often arrive in the early hours of the morning. HKPAPA noted that managing pilot fatigue is a significant part of the operational challenge during these "circadian low" periods.
Environmental Variables: Factors such as wind speed, visibility, ground humidity, and runway friction play a massive role. The Association explained that an excursion can be caused by delayed braking, engine thrust reverser issues, or sudden mechanical failure.
The "Giant Perspective": From a cockpit situated several stories high and moving at high speeds, identifying small ground vehicles like patrol cars is extremely difficult, even with airport lighting and monitoring systems.
A Call for Group Responsibility
HKPAPA described the incident as a deeply moving tragedy for the entire aviation community. The Association emphasized that safety is a "group responsibility"—a seamless coordination between the cockpit, ground staff, and air traffic control.
Supporting the Investigation
HKPAPA expressed full confidence in the Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA), a team of former pilots and engineers, to conduct a thorough review of the aircraft systems and operational procedures. We hope that the findings from the "Black Box" will provide the families of the victims with the answers they deserve.
