The Unseen Guardians: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Aviation Security with AVSECO

In aviation, safety is paramount. At HKPAPA, we are committed to showcasing every facet of this dynamic industry, and recently, we had the incredible opportunity to step behind the security curtain with the Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO).

This exclusive tour gave us a privileged glimpse into the complex operations that safeguard Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and its millions of passengers every year.

Insights from a Leader: Queenie Wong

The tour kicked off with a compelling session led by Queenie Wong, Head of AVSECO Security. Her talk was a powerful reminder that aviation security is a career built on vigilance, precision, and an unwavering sense of duty.

Ms. Wong shared valuable insights on the evolving global security landscape and the critical role AVSECO plays in maintaining HKIA's world-class safety record.

Hands-On Security: Technology and Technique

The practical demonstration was a highlight, bringing the technology of security screening to life. We moved to the operational site where AVSECO staff explained and demonstrated the tools of the trade:

Walk-Through Metal Detectors (WTMDs): Understanding how these archways work to quickly and efficiently screen passengers.

Bag Security X-Ray Machines: We learned about the complex imagery and sophisticated software used to detect unauthorized items inside cabin and checked baggage.

The opportunity to participate in a live demonstration allowed us to truly appreciate the speed, accuracy, and rigorous procedures involved in ensuring every passenger and bag is secure.

The Nose Knows: Visiting the AVSECO Canine Unit

Perhaps the most engaging part of the tour was the visit to the AVSECO Canine Unit. We witnessed the highly specialized training of the working dogs, which are essential to the security network.

We saw demonstrations of how these dedicated canines are trained to use their exceptional sense of smell to quickly and reliably detect explosives, firearms, and other unauthorized substances. Their integration into the security team is a powerful example of how technology, human expertise, and specialized animals work together to create a layered defense system.

A Career in Vigilance

This tour was a profound educational experience for our members. It showed that a career in aviation isn't limited to the cockpit or the maintenance hangar; it extends to the dedicated professionals of aviation security, who are truly the unseen guardians of our skies.

HKPAPA extends its sincerest thanks to Queenie Wong and the entire AVSECO team for opening their doors and sharing their vital mission with us.
