SPL-to-PPL Conversion Course
A structured conversion pathway designed for existing SPL holders progressing to a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) in accordance with ICAO standards.
The SPL to PPL Conversion Programme bridges the regulatory and competency gap between a Sport Pilot Licence and a Private Pilot Licence.

Programme Overview
This programme focuses on additional flight experience, PPL-level theoretical knowledge, and formal flight assessment, preparing candidates for full PPL privileges.
Designed for:
SPL holders seeking expanded aircraft, airspace, and international flying privileges and students planning advanced aviation pathways or professional pilot training

Why Convert to PPL?
The Sport Pilot Licence (SPL) is sufficient for most recreational pilots, including those intend to apply to cadet pilot programme. It is more affordable, simpler to maintain, and meets the needs of pilots who fly locally for personal enjoyment.
The SPL to PPL Conversion Programme is intended only for candidates who have a clear and specific reason to upgrade, and who understand the additional cost, regulatory complexity, and ongoing requirements of a PPL.
Conversion Course Fees HK$60,000
When a PPL Conversion Makes Sense
You may consider converting to a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) if you:
-
Intend to self-fund ongoing flying and licence maintenance
-
Require expanded aircraft or airspace privileges beyond SPL limitations
-
Plan to pursue advanced ratings that require a PPL foundation
-
Are considering a long-term professional aviation pathway
Important Reality Check: Flying Abroad
A PPL does not automatically allow you to fly overseas.
Unlike renting a car, flying abroad typically requires:
-
Licence validation or conversion by the local ICAO authority
-
Local flight school checkout and approval
-
Compliance with national aviation regulations, insurance, and airspace rules
This process varies by country and can be time-consuming and costly.
For most recreational pilots, SPL flying within the local system is more practical and cost-effective.
What PPL Actually Unlocks
A PPL provides regulatory flexibility, not convenience:
-
Access to larger aircraft categories and broader airspace
-
Eligibility for night rating, instrument training, and advanced endorsements
-
A recognised foundation for commercial or professional pilot training
These benefits are meaningful only if you intend to use them.
Our Recommendation
The SPL to PPL Conversion Programme exists to support informed pilots
— not to upsell unnecessary licences.
Choose SPL
if your goal is recreational flying, cadet pilot application, skill development, and long-term enjoyment with manageable costs
Convert to PPL
only if you have a clear operational need and are prepared for the additional financial and regulatory commitment
