Aircraft System Messages: Build the Picture Before the Answer

Six questions when a system message appears

What changed?

Identify the new message, indication, sound or performance change without adding an assumption.

What is the aircraft doing?

Confirm flight path, automation and immediate control remain appropriate.

Do indications agree?

Look for supporting or contradictory evidence on related systems and instruments.

What matters first?

Prioritise flight path and immediate threats before diagnosis or secondary tasks.

Which procedure applies?

Use the approved alerting logic, checklist and crew task allocation.

What are the consequences?

After completing actions, consider operational effects, limitations and landing options.

Describe before diagnosing

A message is an entry point into the aircraft’s alerting and procedure system, not permission to invent a technical explanation. Start with observable facts: the exact message, affected indications, time of occurrence and any associated change. Premature diagnosis can direct attention away from the real problem.

The operating crew must control the aircraft, confirm the situation and follow the applicable procedure. A second officer can support by retrieving information, monitoring flight path, recording details or checking consequences when directed.

Automation can hide or amplify confusion

A failure may change flight-control, navigation, thrust or display behaviour. Continue to verify what mode is active and what the aeroplane will do next. Do not let technical discussion consume the monitoring capacity needed to detect an altitude, route or speed deviation.

Once immediate actions and checklists are complete, rebuild the operational picture: fuel effect, weather suitability, runway capability, maintenance coordination and diversion choices. The event is not finished merely because the message disappears.

Train realistic information management

Multiple unrelated failures create drama but often teach little. A better scenario uses one credible fault, realistic ambiguity and normal operational pressure. The crew must resist rushing, use task allocation and communicate decisions clearly.

A Level-D instructor can pause and replay the scenario, showing where attention narrowed or assumptions replaced evidence. That feedback is especially valuable before an upgrade.
