FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ICAO English practice: your questions answered.

What to practise, how it works and what to expect.

What is Radio Room?

Radio Room is an aviation English and radio communication practice tool from HKPAPA. It combines simulated flight situations, English prompts and listening exercises to help learners practise clear responses and understand radio calls.

Who is Radio Room designed for?

Radio Room is designed for learners working towards ICAO English Levels 4–6 who want to practise communication in aviation situations. It provides practice opportunities; using it does not establish that a learner has achieved a formal language rating.

What aviation English skills can I practise?

Radio Room covers five practice areas: IFR, VFR and crew communication scenarios; ICAO English prompts; aviation picture description; ATC listening; and decoding aviation words and short phrases. The listening exercises use synthetic training recordings.

Is Radio Room an official ICAO English test, and does it provide a certificate?

No. Radio Room is a practice tool, not an official ICAO English test. It does not award an official ICAO language proficiency certificate or guarantee a rating. Practice feedback checks selected transcript and readback details; it does not formally assess pronunciation, fluency or an ICAO level.

Do I need a microphone to practise?

Radio Room supports typed responses, with voice practice available in supported browsers. Voice functionality depends on browser support; learners can use text to practise their responses.
