Cruise Monitoring Is Not Passive: A Guide for Second Officers

Know the active route, level, next significant point and what the automation is controlling.

Aircraft state

Scan systems, pressurisation, temperatures and messages for change and trend.

Fuel picture

Compare actual fuel and burn with the plan at meaningful intervals.

Look beyond the present smooth air to convection, turbulence and destination trends.

Communication

Maintain frequency awareness, clearances and handovers without allowing long silence to reduce attention.

Next workload peak

Anticipate oceanic exit, step climb, rest change, diversion decision or descent preparation.

Monitoring is a cycle, not a stare

Fixating on one instrument can create the illusion of vigilance while the wider picture decays. A better method is a repeatable scan that moves through flight path, aircraft systems, fuel, weather, communications and future threats. The timing and division of those duties must follow the operator’s procedures.

The value lies in trends. A parameter inside limits may still be moving abnormally; a fuel figure may be acceptable but diverging from plan; a weather cell may be distant but closing the available route. Effective monitoring asks what changed and what that change could affect next.

Stay engaged without manufacturing workload

Active monitoring does not mean constant switch movement or commentary. Unnecessary interaction can disturb a stable operation and distract others. Maintain awareness, update the picture at sensible triggers and communicate information when it becomes operationally relevant.

Long periods of low stimulation also increase vulnerability to fatigue and mind wandering. Use approved rest, task rotation and alertness strategies. If fitness for duty is affected, follow the operator’s fatigue-reporting and mitigation process rather than relying on willpower.

Train the transition from normal to abnormal

The most revealing scenarios begin quietly. A small trend appears, a message follows and weather reduces the easy options. The monitor who has retained the background picture can recognise the change earlier and offer clearer support.

Level-D practice can develop this skill when the instructor rewards detection, communication and prioritisation—not merely the handling response after the event becomes obvious.
