THE STORY BEHIND THE MOMENTS
Learning across the aviation industry
HKPAPA, together with the Education Bureau (EDB), hosted a course for 40 university students as part of Applied Learning (ApL). The course brought together aviation, piloting, engineering, aviation services and inflight services, alongside learning about national advancement, space and technology.
Inside an Airbus A320 Level D simulator
Students experienced an Airbus A320 Level D simulator, taking their places at the controls and exploring the flight deck environment. The instruments, controls and communication equipment gave a practical setting to their aviation learning. The course also included a visit to an airline headquarters, extending the experience beyond the simulator to the wider airline environment.
From the CTLS aircraft to Principles of Flight
Students also saw the CTLS aircraft and learned about Principles of Flight (PoF). Alongside their Airbus A320 Level D simulator experience, this introduced another perspective on aircraft and the principles behind flight. A runway inspection extended the learning beyond the aircraft to the environment in which it operates.
Exploring the engineering behind an aircraft
Aircraft engineering formed another part of the course. Students learned about aircraft construction materials and materials science, as well as high-performance internal combustion engines. These topics connected the aircraft they saw with the materials and power systems behind its design and operation.
More than one way into aviation
Piloting was one part of a wider picture. By covering engineering, aviation services and inflight services, the course introduced students to the different areas of work that contribute to the aviation industry. It offered a starting point for considering where their own interests might lead.
Connecting aviation with space and technology
The programme also looked beyond the flight deck to national advancement, space and technology. Bringing these themes into the course placed aviation learning within a broader conversation about scientific development and innovation.
