Six practical takeaways
Define the intended use
Recreation, career, country, aircraft and timescale change the right route.
Identify the issuing authority
A school cannot make a licence globally interchangeable.
Verify privileges and conversion
Ask the destination authority directly, in writing where possible.
Check the school’s approval
Confirm the organisation, course and training location are authorised.
Price completion, not one hour
Include likely extra hours, tests, travel, housing and currency risk.
Inspect operational reality
Aircraft serviceability, instructors, weather and scheduling determine progress.
A licence belongs to a regulatory system
ICAO establishes international standards, but States issue licences and control validation, conversion and local privileges. Recognition does not mean you can automatically exercise every privilege in every country.
If you expect to return home or move elsewhere, ask the intended authority what documents, exams, flight tests, medicals and experience will be required.
Interrogate the school’s promises
Request the exact approval number, training syllabus, typical completion data and a written list of inclusions. Speak with recent students who finished, not only those shown in marketing.
Ask how maintenance disruptions, instructor changes, failed tests, weather delays and refunds are handled. A low advertised hourly rate can hide a costly completion path.
Choose for continuity and support
A suitable school has enough serviceable aircraft and instructors to sustain your realistic schedule, gives transparent feedback and treats safety decisions as normal.
Visit if possible. Observe briefings, records, aircraft condition and how staff respond to detailed questions.
