How to Fly a Consistent Circuit

Brief the local procedure

Circuit direction, altitude, reporting points and noise routes are aerodrome-specific.

Use repeatable references

Pick visual cues that support spacing without becoming fixation points.

Control attitude and speed

Stable energy makes every later decision easier.

Correct for wind

Crab, spacing and turn timing must change with drift.

Configure on time

Complete checks early enough to keep the base and final turn manageable.

Go around without bargaining

An unstable or unsafe approach is a reason to reset, not rescue.

Consistency begins before take-off

Know the published circuit, runway, wind, joining traffic and likely threats. Visualise where the aircraft should be and which checks and calls occur on each leg.

The plan must stay flexible. Traffic, ATC, weather or noise-abatement instructions may require a different shape.

Fly the picture, then verify performance

Maintain a useful outside scan, set the taught attitude and power, and cross-check height, speed and track. Small early corrections prevent large late ones.

Spacing is judged in relation to runway, traffic and wind. A memorised time or angle can support judgement, but should not replace it.

Protect final approach

Complete the turn with enough height and distance to establish the aircraft, assess stability and land within the available runway under the approved criteria.

If alignment, speed, configuration, descent path or traffic situation is unacceptable, go around promptly using the taught procedure.
