Make costs transparent
Discuss budgets and trade-offs without making the child carry adult anxiety.
Protect wellbeing
Sleep, health, school and relationships are part of sustainable progress.
Normalise changing direction
A revised dream is development, not betrayal.
Ambition needs autonomy
Parents can open doors, but the young person should increasingly choose which doors to walk through. Offer options and information rather than a fixed life plan.
Questions such as ‘What did you enjoy?’ and ‘What would you like to try next?’ support ownership better than comparing them with another child.
Separate support from outcome
Programme admission, medical eligibility and aviation hiring involve factors beyond effort. Make love, approval and family harmony independent of selection results.
When disappointment happens, acknowledge it before searching for the next course. Reflection works better after emotion has space.
Use realistic boundaries
Agree time, cost, travel, online privacy and safeguarding boundaries in advance. Review them as maturity and circumstances change.
Seek credible instructors and organisations. Adults should retain responsibility for payments, transport, consent and personal-data decisions.
