Know the command standard
Review the operator’s command course, competencies and decision authority.

Integrate aircraft, crew, cabin, customers, weather, fuel and network effects.
Create speaking-up space
Invite challenge and respond to it without defensiveness.
Decide in time
Use clear triggers before delay removes safer options.
Lead the recovery
After disruption, reset priorities, roles and shared situational awareness.
Own the debrief
Examine decisions and system factors without blame or self-protection.
Command is an operating system
The commander sets the climate in which information is shared, SOPs are protected and decisions are made. Technical competence remains essential, but it must be integrated with leadership, workload management and accountability.
Prepare by observing how effective commanders brief, invite challenge, manage uncertainty and explain decisions. Copy principles, not personalities.
Practise decision architecture
For common threats, define what information matters, who should be consulted and which trigger changes the plan. Examples include fuel deterioration, weather avoidance, technical uncertainty, crew fitness and an unstable approach.
A delayed perfect decision can be worse than a timely conservative one. State the current plan, the review point and the condition that will trigger an alternative.
Use authority to increase information
A strong command style makes it easier for others to speak. Ask open questions, acknowledge concerns and separate respectful challenge from personal opposition.
After the event, review what the crew knew, when they knew it and how the decision process worked. That habit strengthens both safety and trust.
