Six practical habits
Hear the whole clearance
Resolve callsign, level, restriction and conditional wording before acting.
Set and point
One pilot sets the selector; both positively verify the value.
Read back precisely
Use the complete cleared level and challenge any mismatch immediately.
Watch the modes
Confirm capture, vertical mode and target after every automation change.
Protect the last 1,000 feet
Reduce non-essential tasks and increase monitoring near level-off.
Intervene early
Call deviation, disconnect or correct in accordance with SOP before it grows.
Close the loop
Altitude discipline is a sequence: hear, understand, set, point, verify, read back and monitor. Skipping one link makes it easier for expectation bias or a blocked transmission to become an aircraft deviation.
Pay particular attention to similar callsigns, conditional clearances, flight level versus altitude, transition level and clearances that combine speed, rate and level restrictions.
Automation still needs supervision
A selected altitude does not guarantee capture. Confirm the active and armed vertical modes, the target and the aircraft’s energy trend. After any direct, approach or mode change, ask whether the previous altitude protection still exists.
Near level-off, reduce distractions and monitor vertical speed. A high rate close to the cleared level deserves active management rather than confidence that automation will solve it.
Challenge without delay
Either pilot should challenge an unclear clearance, incorrect selector, unexpected mode or predicted overshoot. Standard calls work because they are short, recognised and connected to an expected response.
If a deviation occurs, control the aircraft, inform ATC and follow the reporting process. A factual review of how the defence failed is more valuable than blaming the final person who touched the selector.
