Do ground work on the ground
If an idea can be learned accurately from a diagram, briefing or checklist, understand it before the aircraft starts. The cockpit is a poor classroom for first exposure to basic theory.
Ask your instructor what ‘ready for this lesson’ means. Preparation should match the school’s method rather than an internet shortcut.
Reduce avoidable gaps
Long breaks often require time to rebuild scan, coordination and confidence. Where finances and weather permit, a realistic regular schedule can improve continuity.
Do not overbook beyond your ability to prepare or recover. A tired extra lesson may cost more than it teaches.
Use the debrief as your shopping list
Write three lines: what met the standard, what varied, and the single priority for next time. Attach a small practice task to that priority.
Track costs honestly, including travel, membership, exams, medicals, equipment and likely extra hours. A transparent budget prevents false economy.
