Six checks before paying a flight school
Secure the medical
Complete the professional medical standard you will ultimately need, not merely the minimum for an early lesson.
Verify the approval
Confirm the school, course and training location directly with the responsible aviation authority.
Demand a total-cost view
Include likely extra hours, tests, equipment, accommodation, travel, renewals, ratings and conversion.
Test training continuity
Ask about aircraft serviceability, instructor turnover, weather disruption and realistic completion time.
Read the contract
Understand payment stages, refund rights, expiry, failed checks, course changes and school closure protection.
Connect it to employment
Check work rights, target-airline requirements, licence recognition and what the school’s recent graduates actually do.
Start with the risks that cannot be marketed away
Obtain the relevant professional medical before committing substantial money. Discuss any history honestly with an authorised medical examiner; discovering a barrier after months of training can be far more costly. Then verify the provider and exact course on the regulator’s records. A polished website or airline-style uniform is not regulatory approval.
Ask whether the quoted price is fixed, estimated or based only on minimum legal hours. Request a written list of inclusions and exclusions. Build a contingency for additional training, examination repeats, equipment, travel, accommodation, licence issue, renewals and any ratings needed after graduation.
Investigate whether students can train consistently
Training gaps increase cost and slow skill development. Ask for evidence of aircraft-to-student and instructor-to-student ratios, recent utilisation, maintenance downtime and typical—not advertised—completion time. Speak privately with current students and recent graduates at different stages.
Read the contract before transferring a large deposit. Understand staged payments, refund calculations, expiry dates, price changes and what happens after an unsuccessful progress test. Paying progressively can reduce exposure. If a salesperson discourages independent review or creates artificial urgency, pause.
Review the career connection independently
A licence does not create work rights or guarantee an interview. Compare the course with the published requirements of several plausible employers. Check whether you will need licence conversion, ATPL theory, multi-crew training, upset-prevention training, a type rating or additional hours—and who pays.
An independent conversation with a training department can expose gaps before they become expensive. Use cadet preparation to understand selection standards, but do not buy generic preparation as a substitute for a coherent licensing and employment plan.
