Six practical ideas
Retrieve before re-reading
Write or say what you know without looking.
Check immediately
Correct errors before rehearsing them.
Space the next attempt
Return after some forgetting has made recall effortful.
Mix related topics
Interleaving helps learners choose the right method.
Explain a decision
Apply the fact to weather, navigation, safety or operations.
Track weak items
Study time should follow evidence, not favourite subjects.
Why recognition is misleading
A familiar page can create the feeling of knowledge because the answer is visible. Retrieval practice asks whether the idea can be produced when the page is closed.
Use blank-page recall, flashcards, practice questions or teaching aloud. The effort is part of the learning signal.
How to space practice
Review after a short delay, then again after a longer one if recall is successful. Hard items return sooner; secure items can wait.
There is no magic universal interval. Build a schedule around the test date, complexity and what your results show.
Add reflection and application
After checking an answer, ask: what cue tells me this is relevant, what decision could it change and what common confusion should I avoid?
For aviation, connect subjects. Weather influences performance and route; human factors influence checklist use; air law influences operational choices.
