The familiar faces behind this family story

Louisa Mak, the Miss Hong Kong 2015 winner, co-hosts the programme with Patrick Sir (Patrick Lam), an educator and television presenter. Their guest Winki Lai is a Hong Kong actress who won Best Supporting Actress at the TVB Anniversary Awards 2020 for Al Cappuccino.

In this episode, Winki is also a mother supporting her son Yaya’s curiosity. Together, the hosts and family give the aviation story a personal focus, while Captain Steven Cheung guides the on-screen experience with HKPAPA.

HKPAPA was pleased to collaborate with TVB on the aviation story in Next Gen: Growing With AI (AI時代,未來實習生). The episode follows eight-year-old Yaya, whose fascination with aircraft becomes a chance to experience the cockpit, with his mother Winki Lai supporting him along the way.

From curiosity to a cockpit experience

In the supplied TVB feature, Yaya’s interest in aircraft leads to two distinct experiences: a flight simulator session, followed by a flight in a real light aircraft under Captain Steven Cheung’s guidance. Winki joins the simulator experience and later watches from the ground with the hosts as her son takes to the air with the captain.

The programme captures his concentration as he listens, responds and discovers an unfamiliar environment. It also shows the family side of the experience: a mother watching her child try something new, and a child finding a more personal connection to a long-held interest.

A conversation about the future

The series uses children’s career interests to explore how work may change in the age of AI. In the aviation segment, Captain Steven discusses automation and the continuing importance of human judgement. These are perspectives shared in the programme, rather than a prediction of any child’s future career.

For HKPAPA, the story offers a useful starting point for family conversations: what interests a child, what they notice when they try something new, and how adults can support that curiosity without deciding their future for them.

Thank you, TVB

We thank TVB and the programme’s production team for this partnership and for bringing aviation learning to a wider audience. Our thanks also go to Louisa Mak and Patrick Sir for guiding the conversation, to Winki Lai for sharing her perspective as a parent, and to Yaya for his curiosity and enthusiasm.

It was a pleasure to contribute to a programme that gives children’s ambitions thoughtful attention. We hope this story helps more families see the value of asking questions, exploring interests and learning together.
