Weather Ahead: What a Cruise-Relief Pilot Should Watch

Weather information becomes useful when placed on the route

A warning hundreds of miles away may be irrelevant, while a modest developing cell across the only practical diversion path may matter greatly. Translate products into position, timing and consequence: when will the aircraft reach it, which level or route options exist, and when must a decision be made?

Use all approved sources available to the crew. Weather radar shows reflectivity, not a complete map of hazard; forecasts have uncertainty; pilot reports describe another aircraft at another time. The operational picture comes from combining evidence without overstating precision.

Monitor change, not just colour

Convective systems grow and move. Turbulence information evolves. Destination conditions can cross limits near the expected arrival time. Record the trend and next review point so monitoring remains purposeful rather than reactive.

Second officers should also understand how weather affects fuel, ride, cabin service, route availability and workload. A good briefing might be one sentence: threat, timing, impact and what information will be checked next.

Create realistic weather workload in training

A useful simulator scenario does not begin with an obvious red wall directly ahead. It starts with uncertain reports, developing returns and competing choices. The crew must decide when to request deviation, reassess fuel and protect an exit.

For JFO preparation, combine weather with descent planning or a system issue. This teaches prioritisation and communication while preserving the fundamental rule: avoid hazardous weather using approved guidance and adequate margins.
