Failed a Type Rating? What to Do Next

Six practical habits

Get the formal outcome

Confirm exactly which event, standard and regulatory status apply.

Check the rules

Use the authority, ATO, operator and contract documents for your case.

Preserve records

Keep lawful copies of reports, training records and correspondence.

Map the gaps

Separate technical knowledge, handling, procedures, CRM and performance factors.

Retrain deliberately

Use an approved plan with qualified instructors and clear readiness evidence.

Protect your narrative

Be truthful, concise and professional with future employers and authorities.

Different failures have different consequences

An unsatisfactory progress report, failed skill test, failed proficiency check and discontinued event may not have the same regulatory or employment effect. Ask the training organisation or authority to confirm the formal classification.

Do not rely on forum advice from another jurisdiction. Licensing rules, retest requirements, appeal routes and employer processes differ.

Build an evidence-based recovery

Collect the feedback you are entitled to receive and translate it into specific behaviours. Identify whether the issue was knowledge, handling, procedural accuracy, monitoring, workload, communication or a combination.

Choose retraining that addresses those gaps. Repeating a full generic profile without targeted instruction may consume time without changing the weak behaviour.

Manage career communication carefully

Do not conceal a reportable training history or invent explanations. Prepare a factual account: what happened, what you learned, what retraining occurred and what objective evidence now supports readiness.

Failure can affect confidence and wellbeing. Use appropriate peer, representative and health support, especially if sleep, anxiety or fitness for duty becomes a concern.
