Why spoofing is different

Jamming removes a signal; spoofing can replace authentic information with a false solution. The first sign may therefore be a smooth but incorrect position, time or velocity rather than a clear loss message.

The correct response is not to diagnose the transmitter from the cockpit. It is to identify inconsistency, protect the aircraft path and determine which approved sources remain trustworthy.

Build a cross-check before exposure

Brief likely regions, expected system effects and independent navigation options. Agree which displays and raw sources will be compared and what change would trigger an ATC call or change of procedure.

During exposure, compare position trend, inertial or radio solutions where available, terrain and weather reasonableness, groundspeed, clock behaviour and ATC surveillance information. Follow the aircraft-specific procedure.

Manage secondary effects

False GNSS data can influence systems that use position or time. Treat apparently separate warnings as potentially connected, but action each according to the approved checklist and operational priorities.

Once clear of the event, confirm recovery before restoring normal reliance. Record facts, not theories, and report through operator and regulatory channels.
