Train the competencies underneath the event
A scenario may present an engine failure, weather threat or system malfunction, but the transferable skills include flight-path management, application of procedures, communication, workload management, problem-solving and leadership or teamwork.
Evidence-based and competency-based training emphasise performance across these dimensions. Preparation should therefore include how you think and coordinate, not only what button follows which alert.
Use the simulator as a learning environment
Review limitations, memory items, normal and abnormal procedures and recent operator training themes. Practise accurate recall, then connect it to the full checklist and operational decision.
Avoid unapproved simulator scripts obtained from colleagues. They encourage anticipation of a particular trigger and can weaken performance when timing, weather or system state changes.
Recover from surprise
When the scenario becomes untidy, return to priorities: control the flight path, establish a safe state, apply the procedure, communicate and reassess. Name uncertainty rather than rushing into a diagnosis.
A strong debrief separates observable behaviour from personality. Capture what happened, why the defence was weak and what action will be practised next.
