Why Aircraft Leave Contrails

Six things to remember

Contrail means condensation trail

The familiar white line is a cloud of small ice particles.

Cold air is essential

Formation normally occurs in very cold upper-troposphere conditions.

Exhaust adds water vapour

Combustion products mix with the surrounding air.

Particles provide nuclei

Water can condense and freeze on tiny particles.

Humidity controls persistence

Dry air makes a trail fade; ice-supersaturated air lets it grow.

Winds reshape the line

Persistent trails can spread and drift into cirrus-like cloud.

A cloud made behind an engine

Jet fuel combustion produces water vapour. In sufficiently cold, moist air, the exhaust plume cools rapidly and ice crystals form around small particles, creating a visible trail.

Short-lived condensation can also appear around wings or propellers when local pressure changes cause atmospheric moisture to condense.

Why two nearby aircraft can look different

Atmospheric layers vary over short distances and heights. One aircraft may cross air suitable for persistent contrails while another is in drier air.

A trail that stops and starts can therefore reveal changing upper-air conditions rather than a change in the crew’s actions.

Contrails and climate

Persistent contrails add human-made cirrus cloud and can influence the atmosphere’s radiation balance. Researchers are studying how routing, engines and fuels might reduce their climate effect.

The science concerns when and where persistent trails form; it does not make every visible line equally important.
