Why Aircraft Windows Are Rounded

The fuselage acts like a pressure vessel

At altitude, a pressurised cabin has a higher pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. The fuselage therefore carries loads that repeat as the aircraft climbs and descends.

Cut-outs for windows and doors need reinforcement because they interrupt the continuous shell. Their geometry affects where stress becomes concentrated.

The Comet lesson

Investigations into early de Havilland Comet break-ups found high stress concentration around squarish window and frame corners, contributing to fatigue cracking.

The history is more complex than the popular phrase ‘square windows caused the crash’, but the core engineering lesson is sound: sharp corners in cyclically loaded structure require great care.

Why oval is not the whole answer

Modern safety also depends on materials, reinforcement, manufacturing quality, inspection, fatigue testing and damage-tolerance design.

The rounded window is therefore an elegant visible feature of a much larger structural-safety system.
